ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, has announced the closure of its music-streaming app, Resso, in India by the end of January.

Government Directive Leads to Closure

The decision to shut down Resso in India comes after the Indian government directed Apple and Google to remove the app from their stores in December. ByteDance’s representative mentioned that due to local market conditions, they can no longer serve Resso users in India.

Government Inquiry on Data Handling

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had raised concerns about the improper use of proprietary algorithms in processing Indian user data on the Resso app. Instead of responding to the government’s queries, Resso chose to exit the market.

Closure Details and User Refunds

Resso will cease its operations on January 31, and users will receive refunds for any remaining subscription fees.

Resso’s Global Strategy Shift

India was the last market for Resso after discontinuing its music subscription service in Brazil and Indonesia. ByteDance is now focusing on TikTok Music, which is currently available in Australia, Mexico, and Singapore. However, there are no plans for an Indian launch.

ByteDance Competing with Music Streaming Services

ByteDance aims to grow TikTok Music subscription service to compete with rivals like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. While there are no plans for TikTok Music in the US, ByteDance filed a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office in May 2022.

TikTok Ban in India and Global Expansion

TikTok, the video streaming platform, remains banned in India since 2020. Nevertheless, it has expanded worldwide with over 1.7 billion users as of 2023.
