Kerala’s Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the three-day strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). The strike will be held from 28 September to 30 September 2026, demanding implementation of 5-day banking and cancellation of new PLI scheme.
Mr. Vijayan said the bank employees have been waging a bold struggle against the Central government’s covert moves to hand over the country’s public sector banks to corporate monopolies.
He said that the Central Government’s decision to go back on its agreement to declare Saturdays as holidays is a major betrayal of bank employees. He also said that it is unfair for the Finance Ministry to ignore genuine demands such as restoring the old pension scheme while giving major benefits to senior officials and ignoring the concerns of ordinary employees.
He said that the government is trying to weaken the bargaining power of bank unions, which have strongly opposed the write-off of corporate loans. He said that workers and people in Kerala will stand together to oppose this move. He also said that the Central Government should accept the employees’ demands and resolve the issue without further delay.
