The Government of India has asked Banks to remain open on Sunday i.e. 27 September 2026. The Government has published press release via PIB and the RBI has also given permission to open branches on Sunday.

This has been done for customer convenience as bank employees will be on strike from 28 to 30 September 2026.

Amidst this, Bank employees are confused whether they have to attend office on Sunday or not. The UFBU has clarified its stand on Sunday working.

In a circular dated 23 September, UFBU said that they have come across the letter of RBI addressed to IBA granting permission to operate bank branches and currency chests on Sunday, the 27th September, 2026.

Based on this, different Banks are giving different types of instructions. UFBU said – We aware that because our struggle is getting intensified, because our unity is getting more fortified, because they know that our strike will be successful, the IBA and bank managements are moving desperately.

There is no clarity whether 27th is declared as a working day under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Similarly, it is not clear whether it is to transact all banking business or only to fill up ATMs and use Currency Chest, etc.

UFBU held an urgent meeting online on 23 September at 10:00 PM to discuss this issue. It has been decided to get full details of the instructions given by Banks and thereafter take up the issue suitably with IBA.

So, as of now, it’s not clear whether Bank employees have to attend office on Sunday or not. UFBU will take up the issue with IBA, understand the whole matter and then UFBU will advise its members whether to attend office or not.
