For her undergraduate education, Murati attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, on a Davis-UWC Scholarship; while there she was selected for the school’s five year, dual degree program in engineering with Dartmouth College. On November 17, 2023, Murati took over as interim chief executive officer of OpenAI, following the abrupt removal of Sam Altman.
She is an advocate for the regulation of AI, arguing that governments should play a greater role “in aligning on some basic safety standards for deployment of these models.
At the helm of OpenAI’s technology division as Chief Technology Officer since May 2022, Mira Murati, 34, has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s strategy of openly testing and refining its AI tools.
Under Murati’s guidance, OpenAI has successfully translated academic research into practical products, democratizing access to AI and fostering widespread public interest in this transformative technology.
