A 40-year-old sales specialist from a multinational cybersecurity company has been apprehended by the police on charges of befriending the deputy manager of a private bank through a matrimonial site and engaging in sexual exploitation in Mumbai, Lonavla, and Singapore, under the false promise of marriage.

It was later revealed that the accused was already married and a father to a five-year-old. Additionally, he allegedly installed surveillance on the woman’s phone, allowing him to monitor her calls and messages.

The Borivali police took the accused into custody on Saturday. According to the filed FIR on Friday, the accused first encountered the complainant on a matrimonial site in 2011, but their interaction was limited due to his alleged role in the complainant’s previous breakup.

In 2014, he apologized for the past on LinkedIn, and in 2017, after sending her a gift at her workplace, they began communicating. Despite the complainant’s initial rejection of the gift, she decided to give him a chance. However, she later discovered his marital status in March 2019 and confronted him.

The accused claimed to be divorcing his wife and insisted on marrying the complainant, engaging in non-consensual physical relations on multiple occasions. In March 2022, he reportedly bugged her phone and tracked her communications.

The complainant found a ‘spy’ app on his laptop’s hard drive, alleging that he recorded her nude video and potentially shared it with his wife. His wife confirmed his divorce intentions in April 2022, but the complainant realized his insincerity in seeking marriage this month, prompting her to approach the police.

The police have registered a case under sections 376, 376(2)(n), and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. The Charkop police initiated a ‘Zero FIR,’ transferring the case to Borivali police due to the jurisdiction of the offense. The accused remains in police custody, and investigations are ongoing, as stated by Ninad Sawant, senior inspector at Borivali police station.
