WhatsApp Scam: Fraudsters looting more than Rs.1 crore daily with the help of Chinese Nationals

The Hyderabad cybercrimes police recently apprehended a man from Tirupati, identified as Neshnor Sirish Kumar (38), for his alleged involvement in a scam that cheated a person from Lower Tank Bund out of ₹60 lakh through a WhatsApp ‘review scam.’

Accusations and Involvement with Chinese Nationals

Authorities have revealed that Mr. Sirish Kumar, the accused, was engaged in defrauding individuals across India with the assistance of Chinese nationals. He reportedly facilitated the operation by setting up bank accounts for these Chinese collaborators, and he even traveled to China to meet them in connection with the fraudulent activities.

Modus Operandi of the Scam

The victim from Lower Tank Bund lodged a complaint, stating that he was contacted by individuals claiming to be ‘executives’ on WhatsApp and Telegram. The scammers, as per officials, assigned tasks such as liking YouTube videos and sharing screenshots. To establish trust, they would pay small sums to their victims before ensnaring them in a more elaborate scheme on Telegram.

Extent of Fraudulent Activities

Mr. Sirish Kumar is alleged to have managed to extract approximately ₹1.5 crore from a single account in a single day. Authorities have disclosed that he and his accomplices are facing multiple cases registered against them across various locations in India. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
