A 45-year-old doctor residing in Dharwad recently became a target of cyber criminals, resulting in a substantial loss of Rs 1.79 crore. The cyber crime police are actively investigating the incident, which unfolded two months ago when the doctor received a call from an unknown individual.
Deceptive Financial Advisor Scheme
The fraudster, masquerading as a financial advisor, lured the doctor with promises of lucrative returns on her stock market investments. Specifically, the caller recommended investing in the IPO of Planet Image International Company for significant profits. The doctor, trusting the advice, followed the caller’s instructions, even joining a social media site at their suggestion.
Extraction of Sensitive Information
The situation took a dark turn as the cyber criminals successfully obtained sensitive data related to the doctor’s bank accounts during their interaction. This breach led to the unauthorized transfer of Rs 1.79 crore from various bank accounts linked to the victim.
Unclear Methods Prompt Further Investigation
The means by which the criminals acquired such personal information remain unclear, prompting the police to delve deeper into the investigation. A case has been officially registered, and the police are urging the public to be vigilant and aware during financial transactions to prevent falling prey to similar schemes.
