In a significant ruling, the Special Judge for CBI cases in Ahmedabad sentenced Anil Kumar Singh, a former Inspector with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs. 20 lakh. The sentence was delivered in connection with a disproportionate assets case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered the case against Singh on December 31, 2007. The charges claimed that Singh, during his tenure from August 1, 2001, to November 30, 2007, had acquired assets worth Rs. 19.44 lakh, which was 314% more than his known income.
After a thorough investigation, the CBI filed a charge-sheet on December 9, 2009. The probe revealed that Singh had amassed assets amounting to Rs. 22.15 lakh, which was 84.6% higher than his declared income, between January 1, 2000, and July 1, 2006.
The court, after a detailed trial, convicted Singh based on the evidence presented. During the trial, 59 prosecution witnesses were examined, and 168 documents were presented to support the charges.
The court’s decision marks a major step in the fight against corruption, holding Singh accountable for the illegal accumulation of wealth during his public service.
