In a major crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken strict action against employees linked to Punjab National Bank (PNB). A Bank Mitra working on an outsourcing basis at PNB’s Bilsi branch has been removed from duty after being caught accepting a bribe. On the same day, the CBI arrested the manager and a clerk of the PNB Sahaswan branch for taking a bribe of ₹40,000.
What Happened in the PNB Bribery Case?
On April 30, 2025, the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Unit caught Rajiv Gangwar, the loan officer and branch manager of PNB Sahaswan, and a clerk, red-handed while they were accepting a bribe of ₹40,000. In a separate but related action, the Bank Mitra (Customer Service Point agent) of PNB Bilsi branch, Manish Kumar, was caught taking a bribe of ₹15,000.
All three individuals were taken into custody by the CBI and later sent to Lucknow, where they were remanded to jail.
What Action Has Been Taken So Far?
Following the arrests, Punjab National Bank’s senior management took immediate action. The Bank Mitra from Bilsi branch has been removed from service, and his official ID has been deactivated.
However, the manager and the clerk from the Sahaswan branch have not been suspended yet. According to sources, a special investigation committee has been formed by the bank. This committee is currently looking into the roles of the manager, clerk, and other employees who may be involved.
The bank has stated that further action will be taken only after carefully reviewing statements, evidence, and CCTV footage. The internal investigation is still ongoing.
What Is a Bank Mitra?
A Bank Mitra is a person appointed under outsourcing or partnership models to provide banking services in rural and semi-urban areas. They act as representatives of banks at the grassroots level and usually handle transactions and small loans. In this case, the Bank Mitra was found misusing his position to take illegal money from customers.
Why This Case Matters?
This incident has once again raised concerns about corruption in banking services, especially in rural and semi-urban branches. Bribery cases like this not only affect customer trust but also damage the reputation of public sector banks like PNB.
The CBI’s swift action shows that anti-corruption efforts are being taken seriously, and the Punjab National Bank is under pressure to ensure such cases are dealt with transparently and fairly.
