Zomato, a popular food delivery service, has temporarily stopped delivering non-vegetarian items in several states in North India. The company made this decision in compliance with a government order.

Reason Behind the Move

The suspension is in response to the consecration ceremony for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, a significant cultural and religious event. Users noticed the absence of non-veg options on social media platforms, sparking speculation about the cause.

Zomato’s Clarification

Responding to user concerns, Zomato clarified on social media that the decision was made in accordance with the government’s notice. The suspension affects states like Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Collective Restaurant Decision

Varun Khera, the head of the National Restaurant Association of India in Uttar Pradesh, revealed that restaurants in the state collectively agreed to serve only vegetarian food on January 22. This decision emphasizes the importance of honoring the government’s order, given the significance of the Ayodhya event.

Closure of Meat Shops

In line with the ceremony, meat shops in the affected states were closed. The chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh issued an order instructing the closure of liquor vends and meat shops on January 22.

State-specific Measures

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the closure of meat shops and slaughterhouses until 4 pm on January 22. He urged restaurants in Assam to refrain from serving non-vegetarian food items until 2 pm on the day of the ‘Pran Pratishtha.’ Additionally, the Assam government declared January 22 as a ‘Dry Day’ to maintain the religious sanctity of the Ram Mandir consecration.
