PNB Senior Manager in Purulia Circle Dies due to Work Pressure and Toxic Work Culture
A 37-year-old Senior Manager of Punjab National Bank in Purulia Circle, Bir Singh Sawayain, died on August 26, 2026. Bank officers in the region have alleged his death due to work pressure and the toxic working environment in the circle. Purulia is the westernmost district of West Bengal.
According to reports, he was under significant work pressure and had been asked to work at the branch during the holidays on August 22 and 23. The officer had informed the authorities that he was feeling unwell and wanted to consult a doctor. However, he was allegedly asked to open the branch on August 22. During his work at the branch, his health reportedly deteriorated suddenly. He later passed away on August 26.
The Circle Secretary said the incident should not be treated only as an unfortunate death and raised questions about the work culture and pressure faced by officers in the circle and the bank.
The association has alleged that the focus on rankings and targets has resulted in excessive pressure on employees. It said that the responsibility of senior leadership is not limited to achieving targets but also includes ensuring a healthy and safe working environment.
The Circle Secretary has called for a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Sawayain’s death, including the working conditions and pressure he allegedly faced.
If the reasons of the death are true, then Punjab National Bank should definitely conduct inquiry into the case. Such incidents should be dealt with very seriously and steps should be taken to prevent such incidents.
The association conducted a protest demanding justice for the officer. Bank Officers in the circle stated that there is severe work pressure in the circle.
