Thieves Attempt to Rob SBI NIT Branch in Raipur, Break Strongroom Locks but Fail to Steal Cash
A major security breach has been reported at the SBI NIT branch in Raipur. Unidentified thieves broke into the bank in the Saraswati Nagar police station area and tried to enter the strongroom. They damaged several parts of the bank but failed to steal the cash or money kept in the lockers.
Bank Reopened After Two Days
The bank was closed after the evening of August 29 and reopened on the morning of August 31. When employees returned, they found signs of theft and damage inside the branch. Police said the thieves entered the bank by cutting through a window grille.
Computer Parts Stolen
The thieves also entered the bank manager’s cabin and damaged a computer. They removed the CPU and stole its hard disk, RAM and SSD. The stolen computer parts are estimated to be worth around ₹13,000.
Strongroom Locks Broken
The most serious part of the incident was the attempt to enter the strongroom. The thieves broke four locks on the strongroom grille gate and main door. They also tried to break open the safe kept inside. However, they were unable to access the safe. The cash kept in the bank and the money stored in the lockers remained safe.
CCTV Cameras Damaged
The thieves also tried to destroy evidence by damaging the bank’s CCTV system. They smashed the CCTV cameras and cut their wiring. One of the four locks on the locker room door was also found broken.
FIR Registered
Saraswati Nagar police have registered an FIR against unidentified thieves based on a complaint filed by Utkarsh Dewangan, manager of the SBI NIT branch. The case has been registered under Sections 305, 324(4) and 331(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police Investigation Underway
Police are checking CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the suspects. They are also using technical evidence to find out who was involved in the break-in and locate the accused.
