Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested a man for depositing counterfeit Rs 500 currency notes in a cash deposit machine at the State Bank of India (SBI) Itanagar branch. The total amount of fake notes deposited was Rs 34,000, as reported by SBI to the police on December 5. The accused has been identified as Pubia Nachi.

Upon receiving the report, the police registered a case and launched an investigation. A team led by SDPO Itanagar K Dirchi, Inspector K Yangfo, and others visited the SBI branch, examined the cash deposit machine, and collected evidence. The team photographed the scene, prepared a rough sketch map, recorded statements from witnesses and the complainant, and seized the counterfeit notes.

Following their investigation, the police arrested Nachi from his residence in the Niti Vihar area. After a medical examination, he was placed in police custody for further questioning. During interrogation, Nachi admitted that he had received the fake notes from a person living in the Bihpuria area of Lakhimpur, Assam. The individual had falsely claimed to be an RBI employee specializing in old currency notes and had assured Nachi that the fake notes were so realistic they would pass undetected even by bank staff.

Capital Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh commended the investigating officers for their swift action and detailed work. He also cautioned residents in the Itanagar region to be vigilant against scams involving counterfeit currency and warned that engaging in such activities could lead to severe legal and financial consequences.

The police are now working to track down and arrest the individual from Assam who supplied the counterfeit notes. Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station or use the police helpline.

This case serves as a reminder to the public to avoid dealing with unauthorized currency exchanges or fraudulent schemes, as these can result in serious repercussions.
