Kerala doctor committed suicide over dowry demand

A young aspiring doctor, Dr. A J Shahna, sadly lost her life at 28 after facing challenges in her relationship with Dr. E A Ruwise. The distressing situation arose when Dr. Ruwise allegedly demanded a significant dowry, leading Shahna to overdose on anesthesia.

Dr. Ruwise, a doctor in Thiruvananthapuram, was arrested on charges of contributing to Shahna’s suicide. Authorities suspended him from his medical duties, and his academic registration may be canceled if found guilty of seeking dowry.

Shahna’s family, from a modest background, agreed to give what they could for the marriage. However, tensions escalated as Ruwise and his father insisted on more. Shahna’s brother revealed that Ruwise even threatened to call off the marriage.

In a heartbreaking note, Shahna mentioned Ruwise’s promise to marry her and highlighted her family’s inability to meet the alleged dowry demands of gold and land. The incident has sparked discussions about the harmful practice of dowry, with officials and the community expressing concern.

It’s a tragic story that sheds light on the importance of addressing social issues like dowry, affecting lives and relationships.
