Govt asks Banks to be ready for 3-day strike, Read official letter

The Government of India has asked Public Sector Banks to be ready for upcoming 3-day strike from 28 to 30 September 2026. The Government has asked banks to take following preparatory steps:

(i) Customer awareness: Banks shall communicate to their customer/ public by 22.09.2026 making use of all the media channels such as SMS, e-mails, social media, print media and other appropriate modes about the strike and advise them to complete their essential banking transactions by 25.09.2026.

(ii) Law & order/security: State/District representatives of banks shall coordinate with the District Administrations seeking their support in maintaining law and order and ensuring security of banks’ sensitive/critical infrastructure and strategic branches. This Department is also taking up the matter separately with State Government/U.T Administrations for sensitising the police and local administration to extend necessary support to PSBs as and when requested.

(iii) Opening of Strategic branches: All strategic/important branches handling Government transactions shall remain operational during the strike by deploying non-striking employees and/or staff from administrative offices, wherever required.

(iv) Meeting of the Monitoring Committee: Each PSB shall convene its Monitoring Committee meeting immediately and review their preparedness as per the CMP-2024, focussing particularly uninterrupted operations of critical infrastructure and essential banking services.

(v) Management–employee engagement: Bank Management shall make all efforts to persuade employees to refrain from strike and apprise them of the various employee welfare measures undertaken by the bank / Government in recent times.

(vi) No Obstruction in opening of branches and non-striking employees: Any incident of obstruction/restriction of entry of non-striking employees into branches or critical infrastructure may be dealt with appropriately. Wherever required, such obstruction(s) be documented including photographs/CCTV footage, and dealt with as per applicable rules/law.

(vii) IT and digital infrastructure: Banks shall ensure that all IT platforms and digital banking channels remain fully operational, with adequate redundancy and technical support. Any avoidable technical failure of such channels/ infrastructure during the strike period shall be viewed seriously.

(viii) Real-time monitoring: Chairman/ MD & CEOs shall personally monitor the real-time strike position, branch operations and functioning of critical infrastructure during the strike and ensure immediate corrective action wherever required.

(ix) Functioning of Critical infrastructure: Specific attention shall be given to uninterrupted functioning of Currency Chests, CCPCs/Clearing Centres, Data Centres/DR Centres, Treasury Operations and payment systems.

(x) Employee conduct: Bank Management may appropriately sensitise employees regarding the need to maintain industrial discipline and continuity of essential banking services, particularly in view of repeated strike calls.

(xi) Nodal Officer/War Room: Each PSB shall nominate a nodal officer and furnish his/her details, including Mobile number to this Department vide email at ir@nic.in for coordination with the proposed War Room, including coordination with MHA representatives on law-and-order matters.
