The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, has crossed a major milestone. The total number of bank accounts opened under the scheme has surpassed 50 crores as of August 9, 2023.
Of these accounts, 56% belong to women and 67% are located in rural and semi-urban areas. The total deposits in these accounts are over ₹2.03 lakh crore, and about 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued free of cost. The average balance in PMJDY accounts is ₹4,076.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 August 2014. The slogan of the scheme is “Mera Khaata, Bhagya Vidhata” (meaning “My account, fortune maker”)
