A significant security breach involving the sale of a massive 1.8 terabyte (TB) Indian mobile network database, containing personal details of 750 million individuals, has been reported by cybersecurity firm CloudSEK. The breach, disclosed on Monday, exposed critical information such as names, mobile numbers, addresses, and Aadhaar details. CloudSEK researchers emphasized the unprecedented potential for cyberattacks and identity theft due to the extensive leak.

The breach was initially detected when a threat actor named CyboDevil advertised the database for sale on a dark web platform. This dataset reportedly covers around 85% of the population, marking it as one of the largest breaches of its kind. Another threat actor, UNIT8200, offered a similar dataset on Telegram on January 14, affecting all major telecom players, as per CloudSEK’s findings.

Despite CloudSEK’s inquiries, CyboDevil denied involvement in the breach, claiming to have obtained the data through undisclosed sources within law enforcement channels. Notably, members of the CYBOCREW, a hacker group linked to major breaches across various sectors, had previously claimed real-time access to Indian phone numbers and Know Your Customer details in July 2023.

This incident underscores the persistent targeting of databases containing personally identifiable information by threat actors. In a recent similar breach last month, the defence pensioners’ portal SPARSH suffered a breach, compromising personal information of over 3 million former servicemen.
