In a daring attempt, thieves dug a 10-foot-long U-shaped tunnel to rob the Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch on Dabwali-Ellenabad road in Sirsa, Haryana. The tunnel opened directly into the strong room of the bank. The incident came to light on Monday morning when bank officials arrived to find the tunnel.

Police Launch Investigation
The police were immediately informed, and an investigation was launched using fingerprints and a dog squad. A police team led by ASP Mayank Mudgil visited the site to collect evidence. CCTV footage from the bank and nearby areas has been seized to identify the suspects.

According to the police, the branch is located near a bus stand and a police post. The bank had been closed for two days over the weekend, from Friday evening to Sunday. The thieves are suspected to have carried out the act on Sunday night.

How the Tunnel Was Dug
SHO Brahmaprakash of Dabwali Sadar police station explained that the thieves removed bricks from the foundation of the bank’s wall facing the field and dug a tunnel into the strong room. However, they did not enter the bank premises and left the scene without stealing any cash or valuables. The bank lockers and their contents remain secure.

“It appears the thieves were worried that entering the bank might trigger the alarm, so they abandoned the attempt,” the SHO added.

Bank Manager Speaks
Branch manager Ramraj Meena confirmed that the bank’s strong room was breached but no valuables were stolen. “When we reached the bank on Monday morning, we were shocked to see a pit inside the strong room. Upon inspection, we found the tunnel leading from the field behind the bank to the strong room. We immediately informed the police,” he said.

Allegations of Police Inaction
Local residents, speaking anonymously, claimed they heard the bank’s alarm ring around midnight on Sunday. Despite the noise, they alleged that the police did not respond. Villagers believe the sound of the alarm may have scared the thieves away, preventing them from taking anything.

The police have registered a case against unknown individuals and are continuing their investigation.
