Jhansi: A tragic incident has come to light from Dakheshwar village under Gursarai police station, where a 27-year-old woman named Neha died under suspicious circumstances. Her maternal family has accused her in-laws of poisoning her to death following a heated argument. The police have taken possession of the body and begun an investigation.
Allegations of Harassment and Dowry Demands
Neha’s mother, Sudama, and aunt, Bhagwati, have alleged that she was constantly harassed by her in-laws over dowry. They claimed that although they had given ₹10 lakh in cash and valuable items at the time of her marriage, her in-laws were still dissatisfied. Neha’s husband, who works as a cashier at Punjab National Bank, and his family reportedly taunted her, saying that he had secured a government job and could have easily received ₹25 lakh dowry.
Her family had even promised to transfer their remaining three bighas of land to her in-laws to ensure her happiness, but the situation did not improve. According to her family, Neha was subjected to constant mental and emotional torture.
Incident After Attending a Wedding
Neha had gone to her maternal home on February 17 to attend her cousin’s wedding. She stayed for five days and then returned to her in-laws’ house on February 22, accompanied by her husband and sister-in-law. However, soon after reaching home, Neha’s mother-in-law allegedly picked a fight with her and taunted her over the wedding visit.
According to Neha’s mother, her in-laws forcibly made her drink poison after an argument. The next morning, Neha’s in-laws informed her maternal family that she had consumed poison. When her family rushed to the medical college, they found her lifeless body. Her grieving family insists that Neha did not take poison willingly but was forced to consume it.
Family’s Anguish and Police Investigation
As soon as the news of Neha’s death spread, her maternal family arrived at the hospital and confronted her in-laws. Her mother, crying uncontrollably, accused her son-in-law and his family of murdering her daughter. “If you didn’t want to keep her, you should have sent her back to us. We would have raised her by working as laborers. We never thought this would happen,” she said in anguish.
Neha was originally from Palra village but had been living with her maternal uncle Gotiram and aunt Bhagwati since the age of three. As they had no daughter of their own, they raised Neha as their own child and later arranged her marriage by selling their land. Now, after her tragic death, her mother, aunt, and other family members are inconsolable.
Neha leaves behind two young children—four-year-old Bharat and two-year-old Munno—who are now left without their mother.
The police have sent Neha’s body for post-mortem and are investigating the matter. Her maternal family is demanding strict action against her in-laws, holding them responsible for her death.
