Lakshadweep, India’s tiniest Union Territory, is gaining attention and popularity in Google searches following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the island.

PM Modi expressed his admiration for the tranquil charm of Lakshadweep and shared pictures of his undersea exploration on the microblogging site X. He described the islands in the Arabian Sea as an “exhilarating experience” and encouraged adventure enthusiasts to include Lakshadweep in their travel plans.

Permit needed to visit Lakshadweep

However, it’s worth noting that even Indians require an entry permit for Lakshadweep. According to the rules outlined on the Lakshadweep Tourism website, anyone who is not a native of Lakshadweep must obtain a permit, with the primary aim of protecting the Scheduled Tribes residing there.

How to apply for Permit to visit Lakshadweep?

To apply for the permit online, individuals need to visit the ePermit portal (https://epermit.utl.gov.in/pages/signup), create an account, and complete the necessary form with their details. The expected time to receive the permit via email is 15 days before the scheduled trip.

For those applying offline, the process involves downloading the application form from the Lakshadweep Administration website or obtaining it from the District Collector’s office in Kavaratti. After filling in the required details and attaching the necessary documents, the completed application must be submitted to the Collector’s office, and this offline process may take longer.

The required documents include a passport-sized photograph, a photocopy of a valid ID proof (such as Aadhaar card, voter ID, driver’s license), proof of travel (flight tickets or boat reservation details), and booking confirmation from the place of accommodation. The application fee is Rs 50 per applicant, and there’s a heritage fee of Rs 100 for children aged between 12 and 18, and Rs 200 for individuals above 18.

In accordance with the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands (Restriction on Entry and Residence) Rules, 1967, individuals who are not natives of these islands must obtain a permit in the prescribed form from the competent authority to enter and reside in these islands. Government officials, armed forces members, and their family members visiting or working on these islands are exempted from this requirement.
