India’s smartphone exports to the United States have experienced a remarkable increase, reaching $3.53 billion between April and December of this fiscal year, according to government data. This represents a significant jump from the $998 million recorded during the same period last year. As a result, India has become the third-largest supplier of smartphones to the US, trailing behind only China and Vietnam. The main driver behind this growth is the overall boost in smartphone production in India.
Statistics show that the market share of Indian-manufactured smartphones in the US has risen from 2% last year to 7.76% between April and December of this fiscal year. This growth is largely fueled by an increase in outbound shipments. Meanwhile, the total imports by the US from its top five smartphone providers have decreased from $49.1 billion to $45.1 billion in the current fiscal year. Major brands such as Apple, Google, Samsung, OnePlus, and others have started manufacturing smartphones in India.
During the April-December period, China’s smartphone exports to the US declined from $38.26 billion to $35.1 billion compared to the previous year. Similarly, Vietnam experienced a drop in its smartphone exports to the US, falling from $9.36 billion to $5.47 billion during the same timeframe. On the other hand, South Korea’s exports increased from $432 million to $858 million, while Hong Kong saw a slight decrease in sales from $132 million to $112 million between April and December of 2022-23.
Smartphones began to have a significant impact on India’s export portfolio in 2022-23 when shipments reached $10.95 billion. This trend continued with exports reaching $10.5 billion between April and December of 2023-24. The introduction of the Product Linked Incentives (PLI) scheme and the entry of Apple, a US-based iPhone manufacturer, into domestic production have played a crucial role in positioning India as a leading production hub for smartphones.
