On Wednesday, Akash Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, announced at IIT-Bombay’s Techfest that they are collaborating with the institute for a program called ‘Bharat GPT.’ While he didn’t share many details, discussions are still in the early stages, and no agreement has been reached.

Ambani mentioned that Jio is considering launching an operating system (OS) for televisions and has been working on it for a while. He emphasized the significance of AI-powered applications in the coming decade, stating that AI will transform various products and services.

Ambani revealed plans to integrate AI vertically within Jio and horizontally across its operational sectors, with upcoming AI-powered offerings in media, commerce, communication, and devices. He expressed confidence in Jio’s 5G private networks and assured the rollout of a 5G stack to enterprises of all sizes.

Describing Jio as the world’s largest startup, Ambani encouraged young entrepreneurs to embrace failure and work for societal good. This announcement aligns with Jio’s recent launches, from Bharat phones to a potential cloud laptop. The company also partnered with NVIDIA for advanced cloud-based AI computing infrastructure and collaborated with TM Forum to establish an Innovation Hub focusing on GenAI, LLMs, and open digital architecture.

During the annual general meeting, Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Group, emphasized the need for India to leverage AI for innovation and growth to remain competitive. Inc42 reports that India hosts over 70 GenAI startups that have raised more than $440 million between 2019 and Q3 2023.
