A major nationwide strike, known as the “Bharat Bandh,” is scheduled for August 21, 2024. This protest is in reaction to a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has organized this strike, with significant support from SC/ST groups, particularly from Rajasthan.
Why Bharat Bandh?
The protest is triggered by a controversial Supreme Court decision that affects SC/ST reservations. The court’s ruling excludes the “creamy layer” from these reservations, which has stirred up significant opposition. The ruling allows states to establish sub-categories within SC/ST groups, giving priority to those who are most in need. The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, along with various SC/ST groups, is demanding a reversal of this decision.
How Are Authorities Preparing?
Law enforcement agencies are gearing up to manage the Bharat Bandh. UR Sahoo, the Director General of Police for Rajasthan, has instructed district Superintendents of Police to take proactive measures. He emphasized the importance of engaging with local organizations and market associations to ensure smooth cooperation. According to The Times of India, Sahoo said, “We have asked our officials to organize meetings with groups calling for the bandh, as well as with market associations, to facilitate better cooperation.”
In Jaipur, Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph has already begun discussions with groups supporting the strike. This is part of the broader strategy to prevent potential conflicts and disruptions during the protest.
What Will Be Affected?
Typically, during such Bandhs, public transport and private offices may be disrupted. However, emergency services, such as ambulances, will continue to operate. Authorities are particularly concerned about Western Uttar Pradesh, which is seen as a sensitive area. Measures are being put in place to protect the public and maintain order during the protests.
Similar Protests
This Bharat Bandh follows a series of recent protests in India, including nationwide hospital strikes against violence towards healthcare workers and a local trade union stir in Bathinda. These events highlight ongoing socio-political tensions across the country.
Support and Impact
The Bharat Bandh is expected to receive backing from various social and political organizations. It aims to challenge the Supreme Court’s verdict on reservations, and while the day will see a slowdown in regular activities, essential services will remain functional.
