Begusarai – District Magistrate Tushar Singla faced protests on Thursday when he visited Lohia Nagar Gumti during a slum eviction drive. A large group of men and women surrounded him, demanding that they be provided alternative housing before their homes were demolished.

The situation became tense as the crowd refused to let the DM leave. Police officers tried to calm the people, but the protests continued. After about an hour, officials covered the DM’s car nameplate and escorted him away safely.

Why Were People Protesting?
The protests started when railway officials, with the help of police and a JCB machine, came to remove around 150 slums near the railway line. Residents said they had been living there for decades and had nowhere else to go.

One woman said, “We’ve lived here for 40-50 years. The railway gave us a notice to leave, but they didn’t give us enough time or any place to stay. How can we move like this?” The protesters said they would only leave if the administration provided them with a proper place to live.
Eviction Drive on Hold
Sadar SDO Rajiv Kumar said, “The people were upset about the eviction. They shared their demands with the DM, who ordered the eviction to be stopped for now. The DM was not held hostage.” For now, the eviction drive has been postponed, but the issue of relocating the affected families remains unresolved.
