Identity of the Man Still Unknown

It is still not known who the man is or how long he had been inside the ATM. Authorities have also not confirmed whether he regularly uses the ATM booth as a place to rest or whether this was an isolated incident. These details are yet to be investigated.

Questions Raised Over ATM Security

The incident has raised concerns about the security arrangements at the SBI ATM. The ATM booth, located opposite Jivan Ram Inter College in the town area, reportedly had no security guard on duty. Many people believe this reflects poor security management by the bank. At a time when ATM thefts and robberies are reported in different parts of the country, such negligence could increase security risks.

Police Response

Mau City Circle Officer (CO) Nitesh Pratap said that security at the ATM is the responsibility of the bank. He stated that the bank deploys its own security personnel and is the appropriate authority to provide more information about the incident.

RBI Guidelines on ATM Usage

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), ATM booths are meant only for banking transactions. Sleeping or staying inside an ATM booth is considered unauthorized use. The incident has also raised questions about the effectiveness of the ATM’s electronic surveillance system.

Digital Surveillance Is Mandatory

Although a Supreme Court order does not require banks to post 24-hour security guards at every off-site ATM, banks are expected to maintain proper digital security and surveillance systems. These measures are important to ensure customer safety, monitor ATM activities, and prevent misuse of banking facilities.
