Mangaluru Rural Police have arrested Anil Lobo, the Chairman of Mangalore Catholic Co-operative (MCC) Bank Limited, on charges of abetment of suicide. The arrest follows the tragic death of 47-year-old Manohar Pereira, who took his own life on Tuesday.

According to Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal, Manohar Pereira, a resident of Permanki village in Ulaibettu, accused Anil Lobo of being responsible for his decision to end his life. Before his death, Manohar recorded a video and shared it via WhatsApp, in which he blamed Lobo for his distress.

Manohar had been living with his elder brother, Melburn Pereira, in a house purchased nearly a decade ago with a loan from MCC Bank. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Melburn faced financial difficulties and was unable to repay the loan installments. As a result, the bank seized the house two years ago.

The financial strain caused Manohar significant emotional distress, leading to depression and two heart attacks. In February 2023, Sister Christine from a charitable organization transferred Rs 15 lakh into Manohar’s bank account. Manohar, with the assistance of MCC Bank’s Chairman Anil Lobo, attempted to use the funds to clear the outstanding loan and regain possession of the house.

However, it is alleged that despite these efforts, Lobo withdrew Rs 9 lakh from Manohar’s account using a self-cheque, leaving the loan unpaid. This action is said to have worsened Manohar’s mental health. The house was returned to the family about six months ago.

Following a complaint from Manohar’s brother, a case was registered at Mangaluru Rural Police Station under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with abetment of suicide. The police are currently investigating the incident to verify the allegations and determine the facts.

In response to the accusations, MCC Bank issued a statement clarifying that the bank had followed legal procedures in recovering the loan after the borrower failed to repay it. The bank also claimed that they had provided an opportunity for the borrower to clear the dues with a concession on interest. They denied any wrongdoing, stating that the borrower had managed his savings account independently. The bank urged the public not to pay attention to misleading statements circulating on social media.

The investigation into this tragic case is ongoing, and further developments are expected in the coming days. Lobo has been booked under offenses punishable under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. police commissioner Anupam Agrawal said a detailed investigation is underway to verify the allegations and establish the facts surrounding the incident.
