A major online fraud was prevented at the SBI Pattom branch thanks to the quick action of a bank employee. The victim, 73-year-old retired BSNL employee J. Vasanthakumari, was being targeted by fraudsters who tried to scam her out of her money.

The fraudsters contacted Vasanthakumari, impersonating CBI officers, and told her that she was involved in a money laundering case in Mumbai. They claimed that she was under virtual arrest and needed to transfer money from her account to an account provided by them for verification.

The elderly woman, anxious and confused, followed their instructions and went to the bank. However, when she reached the bank, Anu Chandran, a staff member at the SBI Pattom branch, noticed her distress and decided to talk to her. After a brief conversation, Anu realized that the woman was being scammed.

Anu immediately alerted the cyber police, preventing any money from being transferred. The police later confirmed that the fraudsters had also shown Vasanthakumari her Aadhaar and PAN card details to make their claims seem more legitimate. They convinced her that the money would be returned once the investigation was over.

When asked by Anu why she was transferring the money, Vasanthakumari mentioned that she was sending it to her grandson for his study expenses. However, when she was asked the name of the college, she mentioned that her grandson was studying in Chennai, but the account was linked to a person named Imran Ali from Rajasthan. This raised suspicions, and the bank staff quickly informed the manager and alerted the cyber cell.

Vasanthakumari shared how the fraudsters became aggressive when she stopped responding to their calls. “I told them I was in the manager’s cabin and couldn’t answer their calls. When I mentioned I was at a police station, they hung up,” she said.

Thanks to the vigilance of the bank staff and the timely intervention of the cyber police, the fraud was foiled, saving the elderly woman from financial loss.
