Workers at Samsung India’s plant in Sunguvarchatram, near Sriperumbudur (west of Chennai), went on an indefinite strike on Monday. Their main concern is that the South Korean tech giant is not recognizing their newly formed employee union, and they are also demanding a wage revision. The workers are seeking discussions with the company to address these issues.

Background of the Strike

Two months ago, employees at the Samsung Electronics plant created a union, which is affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). However, the union is still awaiting formal registration with the Registrar of Unions. E Muthukumar, the union’s president, said that the company has not met the union’s demands. In fact, according to Muthukumar, Samsung’s management has urged them to disband the union and has raised complaints to block its official recognition.

One of the key issues is overtime work. The union had decided to stop workers from doing overtime, but the management reportedly forced employees to continue working long hours—up to 11 hours a day.

Current Status of the Union

A senior official from the state labor department has confirmed that the union’s registration application is still being processed. The official also stated that the labor department is mediating between the union and Samsung’s management to resolve the issues. If the talks fail, the government will issue a failure report, and the union can then take the matter to labor courts.

Samsung’s Response

Samsung India has responded by stating that employee welfare is a top priority and that they are committed to addressing any grievances raised by their workers. A company spokesperson mentioned that Samsung is following all laws and regulations and assured that there would be no disruption in services for their customers.

Upcoming Discussions

Samsung India has two manufacturing facilities in the country, and this particular plant produces consumer electronics such as televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines. The company is expected to hold talks with the striking workers on Tuesday in an attempt to resolve the situation.

Conclusion

The strike at Samsung India’s plant highlights key issues regarding union recognition and fair treatment of workers. As both the employees and management prepare for further discussions, the outcome of these talks will be crucial in determining the future relationship between the company and its workforce.
