RBI Monetary Museum in Mumbai to Close Temporarily for Renovation from July 22, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that the RBI Monetary Museum in Mumbai will be temporarily closed from July 22, 2026. The museum is being closed for renovation work and will remain closed until further notice.

About the RBI Monetary Museum

The RBI Monetary Museum is located in the Fort area of Mumbai. It showcases the history and evolution of money in India, starting from the ancient barter system and the use of cowries to paper currency, coins, stock markets, and modern digital payment systems.

Established by the RBI

The museum was established by the Reserve Bank of India in 2004 as part of its educational programme. It was inaugurated by former President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. It was the first museum in India dedicated to the country’s economic history and the study of coins and currency.

Collection at the Museum

The museum has around 1,500 exhibits divided into six sections. Its collection includes coins from the 6th century BCE, the Indus Valley Civilization, the Kushan Empire, the Gupta period, and the British era. Visitors can also see ancient paper currency from India, China, and Southeast Asia, along with financial instruments and interactive displays that explain the development of the monetary system.

Free Entry for Visitors

The RBI Monetary Museum offers free entry to all visitors. After the renovation work is completed, the museum is expected to reopen, and the RBI will announce the reopening date separately.
