The Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department of Madhya Pradesh has launched an investigation against its own minister, Sampatiya Uike, after serious corruption charges came to light in connection with the Rs 30,000 crore Jal Jeevan Mission – a scheme aimed at providing clean drinking water to villages.
The order for this investigation was issued by Chief Engineer Sanjay Andhavan. He acted after a complaint was sent directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following which the central government asked for a detailed report.

What Are the Allegations?
The complaint is that money meant for water supply projects was misused. Instead of reaching villages, a large part of it may have been stolen. The complaint was made by former MLA Kishor Samrite in a letter dated April 12.
He alleged that: Minister Sampatiya Uike took Rs 1,000 crore as commission. Former Chief Engineer BK Sonagariya misused Rs 2,000 crore with the help of his accountant Mahendra Khare. Senior officers in the Jal Nigam’s Project Implementation Unit (PIU) were also involved in looting crores.

Mr. Samrite highlighted shocking details: In Betul district, an executive engineer is accused of withdrawing Rs 150 crore from government accounts without starting even one actual project.
He said that similar suspicious activities were reported in Chhindwara and Balaghat, where money was taken but no real work was done.
Apart from the minister, two executive engineers — one from Mandla and another from Betul — are under the scanner. The Betul official is accused of withdrawing Rs 150 crore without executing any project. Similar irregularities have been flagged in Chhindwara and Balaghat districts.
According to the complaint, 2,200 tenders were issued without any actual work being done, and funds were still disbursed. Samrite also alleged that 7,000 fake project completion certificates were sent to the Centre from the state.
