Mumbai: A 58-year-old cashier working at the Union Bank of India branch in Bhuleshwar has been accused of stealing ₹32 lakh from the bank. According to reports, the cashier allegedly took the keys of the branch’s strong room and quietly left with the cash. A police case has been registered against him, and an investigation is underway.

The VP Road police registered an FIR against Ravindra Surve, who had been serving as the branch’s main cashier since November 25 last year. The complaint was filed by Prajay Mohranna, the deputy branch head of Union Bank of India.

The main role of a cashier is to handle cash operations of the branch. After cash payments and cash receipts, the cashier keeps the cash in the cash vault in the strong room of the branch. A cash register is filled in which the details of the remaining cash are filled and this cash register is signed generally by three officers – cashier, officer and branch head.

On June 6, Surve left the branch without tallying the cash and obtaining the signatures of officers. He also took away the keys to the strong room.

Two days later, on June 8, Surve returned to the branch, quietly handed over the keys, and left without informing anyone. Repeated calls made by bank staff to the cashier went unanswered. Finally, the matter was reported to higher authorities.

In the presence of senior bank officers, the strong room was opened. What they discovered sent shockwaves through the branch. While the vault was expected to contain around ₹43 lakh, officials found only ₹10 lakh inside, revealing a cash shortfall of nearly ₹32 lakh.
