Punjab Police ASI promoted as Sub-Inspector for preventing robbery in SBI

The Punjab Police has honored Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Balwinder Singh for his remarkable valor in thwarting a robbery attempt at the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Dhotian village, Tarn Taran district. Despite sustaining gunshot wounds during the incident, ASI Balwinder Singh’s swift and dedicated response prevented a significant burglary. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav lauded ASI Balwinder Singh’s courage and announced his promotion to the rank of Sub-Inspector. DGP Yadav also pledged financial support from Punjab Police for ASI Balwinder Singh’s medical care and encouraged everyone to wish for his speedy recovery.

The attempted robbery unfolded at approximately 12:20 pm when four armed robbers targeted the SBI branch while bank employees were assisting customers. Three of the robbers entered the bank and proceeded to hold the bank staff at gunpoint, while a fourth accomplice remained outside.

A courageous female customer managed to escape from the bank and promptly alerted ASI Balwinder Singh, who was in the vicinity. Upon receiving the distressing news, ASI Balwinder Singh rushed to confront the robbers. However, the waiting accomplice signaled the other three robbers, prompting their swift exit from the bank. When ASI Balwinder Singh attempted to apprehend the robbers, one of them opened fire, resulting in injuries to his abdomen and leg. Despite his wounds, ASI Balwinder Singh demonstrated exceptional bravery throughout the ordeal.

A case has been registered against unidentified individuals for charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, and various violations of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to armed robbery. Additionally, charges have been filed under the Arms Act. The incident occurred just one day after a deposit of ₹20 lakh had been made at the bank.

ASI Balwinder Singh’s current condition is reported as critical, and he is presently receiving medical treatment at a private hospital.
