The incident took place at the Punjab National Bank near the overbridge of Kanti Naya Chowk, and the entire event was captured on the bank’s CCTV cameras.
The bravery of Bhola Rai was captured on the bank’s CCTV footage. The footage, which lasts for about one and a half minutes, shows two individuals wearing caps entering the bank pretending to be customers. One of them initially approaches the bank guard, while the other draws his pistol from his waist and aims it directly at the guard’s head. The second individual also reveals his pistol and attempts to subdue the guard.
Despite this, the bank’s security guard points his rifle at the criminals. A third criminal then joins the fray, striking the guard with the butt of his pistol and attempting to wrestle the rifle away from him. Failing to obtain the rifle, the criminal shoots the guard in the leg. Bhola Rai, the injured Home Guard soldier, recounted that he was stationed near the bank’s entrance when five masked individuals entered the bank, arousing suspicion. When asked to remove their masks, they refused, prompting the guard to call for the manager. Bhola Rai mentioned that he informed them that a new manager had recently joined, and they were unfamiliar with him.
In response, one of the criminals struck him on the head with the butt of his pistol, while another grabbed him from behind. Nevertheless, Bhola Rai managed to aim his rifle at the criminals. In retaliation, one of the criminals opened fire, hitting Bhola Rai in the thigh. The soldier immediately fell to the ground. Chandrakala Devi, a bank customer who had come to submit a form, stated that as soon as she entered the bank, the criminals began to aggressively push the guard positioned at the entrance, leading to the shooting. The sound of the gunshot caused chaos within the bank, and people outside also started making noise.
According to a bank customer named Manohar Kumar, the criminals had gathered near the market around noon. Two of them were conducting surveillance outside the bank, while another stood near a motorcycle. Meanwhile, the remaining criminals entered the bank. Tirhut Range Inspector General Shivdeep Lande praised the bravery displayed by Bhola Rai, stating that his actions saved the bank from being robbed.
