Punjab National Bank Deputy Manager arrested in Multi Crore Cyber Fraud Case by Gurugram Police
Gurugram: The Cyber Cell of Gurugram Police has arrested two individuals, including a government bank official, for allegedly facilitating cybercriminals by providing bank accounts used in fraudulent activities. The arrests were made as part of an ongoing investigation into a multi-crore cyber fraud scheme.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cybercrime) Priyanshu Diwan confirmed the identities of the arrested individuals as Rohit Sharma, a resident of Eta district in Uttar Pradesh, and Vishwas Kumar, from Farrukhabad district in Uttar Pradesh. Kumar is employed as a deputy manager at Punjab National Bank’s Kashjung branch.
The investigation began in June 2024, following a complaint filed at the Cyber Crime Police Station East. The victim, whose identity has been withheld, reported being defrauded of Rs 1.20 crore under the pretense of stock market investments.
During the probe, the police uncovered that Vishwas Kumar had colluded with Rohit Sharma to open a fraudulent bank account using false business credentials. “The account, registered under Rohit Sharma’s name, was later sold to another accused for Rs 1 lakh to be used in the cyber fraud scheme,” said Sandeep Kumar, spokesperson for Gurugram Police.
Inspector Naveen Kumar, SHO of the Cyber Crime Police Station East, led the team that arrested the suspects in Gurugram on Friday. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to eight.
“The accused have been placed under police remand for further investigation,” the spokesperson added.
In a broader crackdown, the Gurugram Police have arrested 20 bank officials over the past six months for their involvement in various cyber fraud cases, highlighting the growing nexus between cybercriminals and bank insiders.
Since February this year, employees from several banks, including SBI, Kotak Mahindra, Yes Bank, RBL Bank, AU Small Finance Bank, Punjab National Bank, and ICICI Bank, have been arrested for allegedly providing bank accounts to cybercriminals in exchange for money. In a recent case, a deputy manager at ICICI Bank was arrested in September for his involvement in a cybercrime that resulted in a loss of over Rs 25 lakh for the victim.
