A PNB bank staff in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, was caught red-handed by the anti-corruption team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a youth in exchange for facilitating a loan of Rs 4 lakh.

Details of the Incident

On Tuesday evening, the youth was taken by some individuals in two vehicles to a bank branch located on Nagar Meerut Marg. One or two individuals entered the bank while the youth attempted to give Rs 20,000 to a bank employee inside the branch. The employee then took the youth to a room and seized the Rs 20,000 as a bribe.

Meanwhile, CBI officers and employees who were stationed outside the bank caught the bank employee red-handed. This action caused panic among other employees and people present in the bank. The CBI officials took the employee into custody and proceeded to examine loan-related documents and CCTV footage in the bank. They also conducted a search of the employee’s car. The team has initiated further action based on the evidence found at the scene.

Background of the Incident

The incident occurred after a young man from Hapur had applied for a loan of Rs 4 lakh at a Punjab National Bank branch located on Meerut Road about two months ago. The bank employee responsible for processing the loan had demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh in the name of other bank officials. The victim had informed some officials about the matter and demanded action.

Legal Perspective on Bribery in India

Under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) in India, the agreement or attempt to give or receive a bribe is considered an offense, even if the actual payment of a bribe does not occur. It is immaterial whether the bribe is obtained for the benefit of the public servant or any other person. The CBI is the specialized enforcement unit responsible for investigating offenses under the PCA.
