ICICI Bank has introduced a new feature enabling its non-resident Indian (NRI) clients to conduct Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions in India using their international mobile numbers. This announcement, made on Monday, is anticipated to simplify everyday payments for NRIs.

Previously, NRIs were required to link an Indian mobile number to their Non-Resident External (NRE) or Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) bank accounts for UPI usage, which limited their payment convenience. The new feature permits ICICI Bank’s NRI clients to utilize their international mobile numbers registered with their NRE/NRO accounts for UPI transactions. This change applies to customers residing in ten countries, including the USA, UK, UAE, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

The bank has confirmed that this service is accessible through its mobile banking app, iMobile Pay, offering NRIs an effortless method to settle utility bills, conduct merchant and e-commerce transactions, and engage in other financial activities without the necessity of switching to an Indian mobile number. Clients can execute payments by scanning any Indian QR code, transferring money to a UPI ID, or sending funds to an Indian bank account.

Sidharatha Mishra, Head of Digital Channels and Partnerships at ICICI Bank, stated, “With this feature, our NRI clients residing in 10 countries no longer need to switch to an Indian mobile number for UPI payments.” He further highlighted the bank’s objective to leverage the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) infrastructure provided by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to fortify and revolutionize the global digital payments landscape.

This initiative signifies a significant advancement in enhancing the convenience of financial transactions for NRIs, promoting a smoother digital payment experience, and potentially stimulating wider acceptance of UPI across international boundaries.
