NewsClick’s vital operations are on hold after a sudden freeze of its bank accounts by the Income Tax department. The move, announced on December 19th, leaves the news portal scrambling to pay staff and jeopardizes the livelihoods of hundreds.

This latest blow comes amidst a prolonged siege on NewsClick. Raids by the Enforcement Directorate in 2021, an I-T department survey later that year, and the October 2023 arrest of founder Prabir Purkayastha paint a chilling picture of escalating pressure.

Now, with no prior notice and salaries hanging in the balance, the organization faces an existential threat. “The staff discovered it by chance while trying to make routine payments,” the statement reads, exposing the abrupt and callous nature of the action.

NewsClick emphasizes its impeccable legal record and slams the “baseless claims” of the I-T department. They vow to challenge the freeze and remain unwavering in their journalistic mission. “NewsClick and its courageous journalists remain committed to continuing their work,” the statement concludes, appealing for the unwavering solidarity that has sustained them through past trials.
