The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Income Tax Inspector from Vijayawada and a middleman for demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹70,000. The arrests were made on July 29, 2025, following a complaint by a businessman.

According to the CBI, the complainant—who owns and operates a mobile service shop in Ramachandra Rao Peta, Eluru—was being pressured to pay a bribe by an Income Tax officer. Initially, the officer, through a middleman (also referred to as a tout), allegedly demanded ₹5 lakh. The bribe was in exchange for not issuing any official notices or initiating an income tax raid based on petitions that had been submitted against the businessman.

Unable to afford such a large bribe, the complainant negotiated the amount down to ₹1.20 lakh—out of which ₹1 lakh was reportedly meant for the Income Tax Inspector, and ₹20,000 for the middleman.

After receiving the complaint, the CBI registered a case against both accused individuals on July 29, 2025, and immediately initiated action. A trap was set to catch the culprits in the act. During the operation, the middleman was caught red-handed while accepting ₹70,000 from the complainant on behalf of the Income Tax officer.

Following the successful trap, both the Income Tax Inspector and the middleman were arrested by CBI officials. The duo is expected to be presented before the Hon’ble Special Judge for CBI Cases in Vijayawada.

The investigation is ongoing and more details will be released soon.
