A shocking reminder of how even a small act of corruption can ruin an entire career came on Friday, when a CBI court in Ahmedabad sentenced former Senior Divisional Manager of Oriental Insurance Company, Mahendra A. Loonker, to three years of rigorous imprisonment for accepting a bribe of just ₹15,000.
A CBI court in Ahmedabad has sentenced Mahendra A. Loonker, a former Senior Divisional Manager of Oriental Insurance Company in Rajkot, to three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1 lakh in a bribery case. The judgment was delivered on November 29, 2025.
The case dates back to July 2012, when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a complaint alleging that Loonker demanded and accepted a bribe of ₹15,000 from a businessman. The bribe was allegedly taken in return for approving an accident insurance claim filed by the businessman for his injured employee.
The case shows that no amount is “small” when it comes to corruption — even a few thousand rupees can lead to years behind bars, loss of reputation, and the end of a lifelong career.
Following the complaint, the CBI arrested Loonker on the same day—July 11, 2012—and conducted searches at both his home and office. After completing the investigation, the agency filed a chargesheet in December 2012, accusing him of taking illegal gratification and committing criminal misconduct as a public servant.
After a long trial, the court found him guilty and awarded a three-year prison sentence along with a fine. The conviction marks another strong action by the CBI against corruption in public offices.
Greed may seem tempting in the moment, but the consequences last a lifetime. This judgment is a reminder to all government and public-sector employees — integrity is the only way to stay safe. Even a ₹15,000 mistake can cost you 3 years behind bars.
