The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two individuals in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹1 lakh. One of the arrested persons is a senior officer from the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) department, and the other is a tax lawyer.

Who Are the Accused?

What Is the Case About?

According to the CBI, the CGST officer Nishan Singh Malli had issued a penalty notice to a private company run by a businessman. This notice was related to the non-filing of GST returns.

Later, Malli allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹4 lakh to waive off the penalty. The bribe demand was reportedly made in collaboration with the tax lawyer Amit Khandelwal.

Even though the tax lawyer was supposed to help the businessman in the case, he joined hands with the CGST officer and pressured the businessman to pay the bribe.

Unwilling to give the bribe, the businessman decided to report the matter to the CBI. Acting on the complaint, the CBI set up a trap.

As per the CBI’s statement, both the CGST officer and the tax lawyer were caught red-handed while accepting ₹1 lakh. This was the first installment of the ₹4 lakh bribe they had demanded.

The arrests were made while the accused were in the process of taking the money from the complainant.
