India has taken a major step toward boosting floriculture exports, especially from the northeastern region, with the export of the first-ever consignment of Anthurium flowers from Mizoram to Singapore. This milestone reflects India’s growing potential in the global floriculture market, which recorded exports worth $86.62 million during the financial year 2023-2024.

The export was made possible through the combined efforts of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Mizoram’s Department of Horticulture. The flag-off ceremony was held on February 26, 2025, in Aizawl, Mizoram, and was attended by APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev and Special Secretary of the Department of Horticulture, Mizoram, Ramdinliani.

Details of the Exported Anthurium Consignment

The consignment, exported by IVC Agrovet Pvt Ltd, included:

  • 1,024 Anthurium cut flowers (total weight: 70 kilograms)
  • Packed in 50 corrugated boxes
  • Sent from Aizawl, Mizoram, to Singapore via Kolkata
The flowers were sourced from the Zo Anthurium Growers Cooperative Society in Aizawl and were imported by Veg Pro Singapore Pte Ltd, marking an important achievement in Mizoram’s floriculture export journey.

Importance of Anthurium Cultivation in Mizoram

Anthurium is a popular flower in Mizoram due to its vibrant colors, long vase life, and ornamental appeal. The cultivation of Anthurium plays a key role in the local economy, providing a source of income for many farmers, including women. By growing these flowers, local communities have found a sustainable livelihood and an opportunity for economic empowerment.

Promoting Floriculture and Tourism

Mizoram is also known for organizing the annual “Anthurium Festival”, which celebrates the beauty of this flower while promoting tourism in the region. The festival helps draw attention to the ornamental and commercial value of Anthurium flowers.

Successful Buyer-Seller Meet Led to Export Deal

The export to Singapore was made possible after the success of the International Buyer-Seller Meet (IBSM), which was held on December 6, 2024, in Aizawl. This event was organized by APEDA in collaboration with the state government and brought together:

  • Nine international buyers from countries like Singapore, the UAE, Nepal, Jordan, Oman, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Ethiopia
  • 24 domestic exporters who explored export opportunities

Expanding India’s Floriculture Market

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry highlighted that this export initiative is a crucial step toward expanding India’s floriculture exports, with a special focus on the northeastern region. APEDA is actively working to promote more such exports by providing support, organizing promotional events, and fostering collaboration with stakeholders.

Conclusion: A Promising Future for Mizoram’s Floriculture

The successful export of Anthurium flowers to Singapore not only strengthens India’s presence in the global floriculture market but also opens new opportunities for farmers in Mizoram. By expanding export markets, encouraging sustainable farming practices, and supporting local communities, Mizoram’s floriculture sector is poised for long-term growth and success.
