Anurag Bajpai (34), a gold loan department manager at Bandhan Bank in Kanpur’s Govind Nagar, passed away in Kanpur. His body was recovered by the police from his rented accommodation in Kidwai Nagar, Kanpur.
The incident has triggered a police investigation following the recovery of a note and detailed WhatsApp messages sent to his family members.

In his final WhatsApp messages and the recovered note, Bajpai stated that the situation was not his fault. He accused a customer named Nitin Gaur of committing a major fraud at the bank.
According to allegations raised by Bajpai’s brother, the customer had committed a fraud involving a loan, following which ₹4 lakh was withdrawn. Although Bajpai had reported the fraud to senior bank managers and filed an e-FIR, senior bank officials allegedly pressured him to personally repay the missing ₹4 lakh and threatened him with legal action.
Driven by mental distress, Bajpai had resigned from his position three months prior and was serving his notice period. The incident occurred just two days before his notice period was set to conclude.
In his final texts sent to his wife, Divya, Bajpai expressed severe helplessness, stating that nobody was willing to hear his side of the story and that he was being unfairly held accountable.
Anurag also wrote that he wasn’t getting a chance to express his views and that no one was listening. Around 3:10 p.m., Divya saw the messages and replied that he wasn’t telling her the full story. There was no response from Anurag after that.

When Anurag didn’t respond, Divya informed her family. They then called the bank. A bank employee arrived at Anurag’s rented room, but the door was locked from inside. Calling for help went unanswered. The employee informed Divya, who then informed the police. Police and forensic teams arrived at the scene. In the presence of family members, the room door was opened and Anurag’s body was found inside.
Station House Officer (SHO) Neeraj Ojha confirmed that a formal case is being registered, and further legal actions will be taken based on the forensic evidence, the contents of the note, and the complaint filed by the family.
Anurag Bajpai was originally from Bangarmau in Unnao district. He worked as the manager of the gold loan department at the Bandhan Bank branch in Govind Nagar. For the past two years, he had been living alone in a rented house owned by Shailja in M Block, Kidwai Nagar. He is survived by his wife, Divya, and three children: Vaibhav, Mrityunjay, and a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Devika.
