Zomato Abandons Plan to Differentiate ‘Pure Veg’ Delivery Personnel by Dressing Them in Green Uniforms

Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, has announced that the company will no longer proceed with its plan to differentiate its ‘pure veg’ delivery personnel by dressing them in green uniforms. This decision was made just one day after the initial announcement of the pure veg fleet and mode. Goyal stated that this policy reversal was a result of invaluable customer feedback, and as a result, all riders will now wear red uniforms, regardless of the nature of the order they are delivering.

In response to criticism on social media, Goyal clarified that while the company will continue to maintain a fleet for vegetarian orders, they will eliminate visible segregation through green uniforms. Goyal emphasized that customers can now exclusively distinguish their pure veg fleet through the app. He explained, “This will ensure that our red uniform delivery partners are not mistakenly associated with non-veg food.” The decision was influenced by concerns for the physical safety of their riders, as well as potential issues customers might face with landlords and RWAs.

Goyal further explained the need for a separate fleet for vegetarian orders, noting that despite utmost care, there are instances where food spills into delivery boxes, potentially affecting the aroma of the next order. Joining the pure veg fleet will not be based on the dietary choices of the riders. Goyal emphasized Zomato’s dedication to addressing any societal responsibility concerns arising from this change and expressed gratitude for everyone’s input on this initiative.

Zomato’s announcement of the pure veg fleet and mode received a mixed response from social media users. Some dismissed the move as ‘idiotic,’ while others praised it as ‘smart.’ Following Goyal’s decision to abandon the green uniform policy, some users questioned the practicality of separate deliveries for vegetarian orders, while others applauded Zomato for promptly addressing a potential problem. Despite differing views, many agreed that customer feedback played a crucial role in shaping this decision.
