In recognition of pace bowler Mohammad Shami’s outstanding performance in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, the Uttar Pradesh government has initiated plans to build a cricket stadium in his native village, Sahaspur Alinagar in Amroha district. This decision stems from Shami’s remarkable feat of becoming the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, a testament to his exceptional skills and unwavering dedication to the sport.

Acting on instructions from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a plot of land exceeding 1 hectare (2.47 acres) was identified in Sahaspur Alinagar. This proposal aligns with the state government’s broader initiative to construct 20 stadiums in rural areas, fostering cricket’s growth and development across the state.

“This is a significant gesture by CM Yogi Adityanath, acknowledging Shami’s exceptional performance in the World Cup,” remarked Rajesh Kumar Tyagi, District Magistrate of Amroha.

Officials have conducted thorough site inspections in Joya development block, Shami’s village, to ensure the suitability of the proposed stadium site. Additionally, they have provided detailed instructions to local officials regarding the project’s execution. Notably, Shami’s family resides in the village itself.

The DM further elaborated that the stadium will encompass an open gym, a race track, and other comprehensive facilities to cater to the needs of aspiring cricketers and sports enthusiasts.

“Upon receiving the state government’s approval for the proposal and the necessary funding, construction work will commence promptly,” asserted Tyagi.

Shami’s village is strategically positioned, situated approximately nine kilometers from the district collectorate and adjacent to NH-9, the road connecting Moradabad to Hapur.

The district administration intends to collaborate with Shami’s parents to lay the foundation stone for the stadium, estimated to incur a cost of around Rs 5 crore.

Shami’s journey to becoming a cricketing sensation began in his humble village, Sahaspur. Under the nurturing guidance of his father, Tousif Ali, a farmer and cricket enthusiast who had once been a fast bowler himself, Shami’s passion for the sport ignited.

Recognizing his son’s innate talent, Tousif Ali provided Shami with his initial lessons in pace bowling, laying the foundation for his future success.

Despite failing to secure a position in UP’s under-19 team, Shami’s talent did not go unnoticed. An official from the Cricket Association of Bengal spotted his potential and invited him to join Town Club, Kolkata, propelling Shami’s cricketing career forward.
