The Sikkim High Court has recently implemented a new policy that grants menstrual leave to women employees working in its Registry. The official notification, released on May 27, outlines the requirements for availing this leave.

According to the notification, women employees in the High Court Registry will now have the option to take 2-3 days of menstrual leave each month. However, it is important to note that prior approval from the High Court’s Medical Officer is necessary to avail of this leave.

To apply for menstrual leave, women employees must first approach the Medical Officer attached to the High Court and obtain their recommendation. This step ensures that the leave is taken for genuine reasons and aligns with the individual’s health needs.

Importantly, the notification clarifies that the leave account of women employees will not be affected or debited when they take menstrual leave. This provision aims to ensure that women feel comfortable and supported in taking time off during their menstruation without any negative impact on their overall leave balance.

The introduction of this menstrual leave policy by the Sikkim High Court demonstrates a progressive approach towards promoting gender equality and addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by women in the workplace. It recognizes the importance of supporting women’s well-being and acknowledges that menstrual health is a valid concern that deserves adequate attention and support.

This move by the Sikkim High Court is expected to set a positive example for other institutions and organizations to follow, encouraging them to consider implementing similar policies that prioritize the well-being of their female employees.

  1. This is a very sensitive issue….women would feel embarassed each month to publicly announce that they are in their monthly periods….Hence would prefer to keep this matter private ….Moreover it is a Natural Biological process like hunger, thirst, sleep, tiredness, nature’s call etc ….why is a spl leave required for this..working women have been going through this month after month in their careers…Much ado about natural processes….not required….except for those who go through lot of pain during the 2-3 days…
