The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Poonam Gupta as its new Deputy Governor. This announcement comes just before the RBI’s important monetary policy committee meeting, which will take place from April 7-9, 2025.

Who is Poonam Gupta?

Poonam Gupta is an experienced economist who has worked in important financial and research institutions. Currently, she is the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), a well-known economic research organization in India.

She is also:

  • A member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.
  • The Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission (a body that helps in financial planning for the government).

RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta: Experience and Career

Gupta has almost 20 years of experience working in major global organizations like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, D.C. She joined NCAER in 2021 and has been leading research on topics like economic growth, financial stability, and public debt.

She has also worked as a professor in several reputed institutions, including:

  • Delhi School of Economics
  • University of Maryland (USA)
  • Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi

She previously held the RBI Chair Professor position at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and was a professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

Her Role in Policy Making

Apart from research and teaching, she is also involved in important government and global advisory groups, such as:

  • Board member at NIPFP and the Global Development Network (GDN).
  • Member of the World Bank’s advisory groups on Poverty & Equity and the World Development Report.
  • Part of NITI Aayog’s Development Advisory Committee.
  • Executive Committee member at FICCI (a leading business organization in India).
  • Chairperson of the Task Force on Macroeconomics and Trade during India’s G20 Presidency.

RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta: Educational Background

Gupta has an impressive academic background:

  • PhD and Master’s in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA.
  • Master’s in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.
  • She also won the EXIM Bank Award in 1998 for her doctoral research on international economics.

Her Role in RBI

At the RBI, Poonam Gupta will play a key role in managing India’s financial system, ensuring economic stability, and helping in policymaking. She will be replacing Michael Patra as Deputy Governor.
