An SBI officer in Bhopal recently passed away following a heart attack. Employees have expressed deep grief over the sudden demise of Shri Sunil Rajvaidya, Regional Manager, Region-2, who reportedly died after suffering a heart attack.

In a condolence message, Bharat Singh Rawat, Regional Secretary of Region-2, SBI Officers’ Association, Bhopal, described the news as shocking, deeply saddening and heartbreaking.

The sudden demise of Shri Rajvaidya is an irreparable loss. He was remembered as a kind-hearted and humble person who treated everyone with affection and warmth. His guidance, supportive nature and friendly behaviour towards colleagues will always be remembered.

However, this incident has also highlighted a harsh reality that is increasingly becoming a concern in the banking industry: the growing pressure of business targets and the importance given to them, sometimes even in the face of tragic events.

What happened the very next day after the employee’s death has raised serious questions about employee welfare and the sensitivity of senior authorities.

The following day, a message reportedly shared by a senior official in a WhatsApp group acknowledged the unfortunate incident but soon shifted the focus to business targets. The message read:

We had a very unfortunate incident yesterday. It was really shocking. But we have to bounce back, and bounce back very quickly and very strongly.

Please ensure that in retail loans, we disburse at least Rs. 49 crore on a daily basis, viz. Rs. 7 crore per RBO.

Out of this, at least Rs. 3 crore has to come from Xpress Credit on a daily basis and at least Rs. 2 crore from pension loans.

I will be sharing other priorities also very shortly. Come on, Team AO Bhopal!

WhatsApp message reportedly shared by a senior SBI official after the death of the Regional Manager, referring to daily retail loan disbursement targets

Perhaps this reflects the harsh reality of today’s corporate world, where employees are often valued more for the targets they achieve than for the lives they live. According to messages circulated among employees, the bank official had reportedly been experiencing chest pain for 3–4 days but could not visit a doctor because of work-related commitments.

And what followed the very next day? Instead of focusing on employee health, well-being and safety, the team was reminded to bounce back quickly and achieve daily business targets worth Rs. 49 crore. The contrast between the tragic loss of an employee and the immediate emphasis on business targets has raised serious concerns.

It is heartbreaking to see how quickly business priorities can take centre stage even after such a tragic loss. In today’s world, you may dedicate your entire life to your organisation, but when it comes to your own well-being, you may be left to fend for yourself. Targets can wait, but a human life cannot.
