The All India Punjab & Sind Bank Officers Union (AIPSBOU) has announced a series of organizational protests at the Zonal Office in Chandigarh following the recent deaths of two staff members – Sh. Bhupinder Singh and Sh. Panakul Rana.
The two staff members working in Punjab & Sind Bank have recently committed suicide. Sh. Bhupinder Singh committed suicide in Mohali due to harassment by loan borrowers and bank management. Sh. Panakul Rana also committed suicide in Haryana due to harassment from bank management.
Bhupinder Singh, Chief Manager of Punjab & Sind Bank’s Aero City Branch, reportedly died by suicide on October 15, 2026. He was found dead inside his car near Chuni Kalan village.
During his posting at the bank’s Sector 22 Branch in Chandigarh, an intermediary with connections to senior officials at the bank’s Corporate Office in New Delhi approached him about high-value loan proposals. According to the union, he was allegedly pressured to process certain loan proposals. But these high-value loan proposals quickly turned NPA. Additional loans were subsequently disbursed through fictitious transactions in an attempt to manage earlier transactions and prevent the loan accounts from becoming non-performing assets (NPAs). Bhupinder Singh had deposited approximately ₹25 lakh from his personal funds. This shows that he was under tremendous pressure of bank management to regularise these accounts. Unable to bear the pressure, he committed suicide. The union has demanded fair inquiry into the case.
Sh. Pankul Rana, Manager at Jalmana Branch under Regional Office Panchkula, was found dead on the terrace. Jalmana is a village in Karnal district of Haryana. According to reports, a suicide note was recovered from the spot. In the note, he reportedly blamed the bank management for giving him unreasonable targets and humiliating him. He also said that the pressure and humiliation had forced him to take this extreme step.
In the note, he reportedly wrote that he had chosen this step to protect his dignity. He also requested the bank to clear his pending dues so that his family would not face financial difficulties. The incident has raised concerns about work pressure and the treatment of employees in the banking sector. Some of the employees of Punjab & Sind Bank have reported that he was severely humiliated by senior authorities and could not cope up with this. Click here to read his suicide note.
The protest schedule is as follows:
- October 21, 2026: Submission of a memorandum regarding demands and demonstrations to Regional Managers under the Chandigarh Zonal Office.
- October 22, 2026: Members will wear protest badges.
- October 23, 2026: A peaceful demonstration starting at 11:00 AM in front of the Zonal Office in Chandigarh.
Key Demands Raised by the Union:
- Financial and Job Support: Immediate clearance of terminal and other dues, along with expedited compassionate ground appointments for the family members of the deceased.
- Inquiry Formation: Immediate creation of inquiry committees to look into the deaths of both staff members.
- Fair Representation: The inquiry committees must include one independent member from the local judiciary and one representative from the union to ensure a fair investigation.
The notice was signed by AIPSBOU President G.S. Khera and Conveners Samir Mantrao and Balwinder Singh, with a copy sent to AIBOC General Secretary Com. Rupam Roy for support.
