The alleged involvement of the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) in a significant GST returns scam, amounting to over ₹1,000 crore, has raised serious concerns for Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, G. Kishan Reddy. Following a report published in these columns on Tuesday, Mr. Reddy has written a letter to Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, requesting an investigation into the alleged involvement of certain IIT-H officials in the scam.

A copy of the exclusive report, which uncovered the GST returns scam, has been shared with the Union Education Minister for further action. It has been revealed that IIT-H had an agreement with the Telangana Commercial Taxes department to provide IT support. However, the department was not given access to the data, limiting its availability to select officials only.

In response to the incident, the department has initiated an inquiry into why the concerned IIT-H official failed to report the systematic tax evasion fraud and neglected to include any deviations in the monthly report, despite bringing the matter to the attention of the institute director.

During the inquiry, the Commercial Taxes officials discovered a significant “shortcoming.” Certain data fields pertaining to taxpayers were masked, while the IIT-H official admitted to following “oral instructions” from top bureaucrats in the previous regime to conceal key data inputs.
