In the village of Nivaz Nagar in Narwana, Haryana, a man working in a bank set a unique precedent by taking his daughter out for a “banwara” procession on the eve of her wedding.

The procession was a way for the man to send a message that daughters are equal to sons.The man, Deepak Soni, works at HDFC Bank. His daughter, Siya Soni, is a graduate with a degree in pharmacy.

Siya’s grandfather, Shivcharan Soni, is a retired accountant. Soni told reporters that he wanted his daughter’s wedding to be as grand and joyous as a son’s wedding. That is why he decided to take her out for a banwara.

The procession was attended by many people from the village, including mathematics teacher Jai Singh Soni, Jitendra Aggarwal, Manish Patwari, Jai Singh DPE, Manoj Joshi, Kunal Soni, Ratanlal, Surendra Saini Panch, and Karan Saini.

The procession was a welcome sign of changing attitudes towards women in Haryana. It is a reminder that daughters are just as valuable and deserving of respect as sons.
